About Duncan

Christian Counsellor · Psychotherapist · NHS Mental Health Chaplain

Hello. My name is Duncan. I am a Christian counsellor and lay minister with experience in NHS chaplaincy, education and community pastoral work. I offer confidential, faith-aware counselling for individuals and couples, integrating recognised counselling practice with Christian pastoral care. I hold a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies and an Advanced Diploma in in Psychotherapeutic Counselling. My aim is to provide a safe space for people to explore emotional, relational and faith-related concerns with compassion and respect.

I am a Christian counsellor and experienced lay minister with over twenty years of pastoral service across chaplaincy, education and community settings. I have served as a Mental Health Chaplain within the NHS, and previously as a Chaplain and teacher in an education,al setting.  These are experiences that have shaped my compassionate, steady and thoughtful approach to care.

My work integrates Christian faith, psychological insight and recognised counselling practice with Christian pastoral care, drawing from:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Person-Centred approach

thus offering a safe and reflective space where individuals can explore emotional struggles, questions of faith, and life’s wider challenges.

I hold:

  • a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Studies,
  • a PGCE in Religious Education,
  • and a Level 5 Professional Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling Practice.

At the heart of my work is the belief that every person is created with dignity, worth, and value.

Individual Therapy

Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally drained?

A safe space to talk through anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, identity, grief and life struggles within a confidential Christian framework.

Couples Counselling

Feeling distant, unheard, or caught in the same arguments?

Faith-aware support  to rebuild trust, improve communication, and restore emotional and relational connection. Support available for those in relationships and those that are married.

Carrying pressure, stress, responsibility, or things you do not feel able to say out loud?

Discreet, confidential support for men navigating isolation, identity, emotional strain, faith, work pressure and relationship difficulties.

Christian counselling offers space to explore emotional struggles while also recognising the importance of faith, prayer, conscience, meaning and spiritual identity. It is not about being judged, preached at or given simplistic answers. Instead, it offers a safe and compassionate environment where your story can be heard carefully.

You may be looking for counselling because you are:

  • feeling anxious, low or emotionally exhausted
  • struggling in your marriage or relationship
  • grieving a loss or major life change
  • carrying
  • trauma, shame or painful memories
  • questioning your faith or feeling spiritually dry
  • trying to cope with anger, stress or pressure
  • feeling isolated, unseen or unable to talk honestly with others
  • feeling down, low or depression

For some Christians, it can be difficult to know where to turn. You may want professional counselling, but you may also want someone who understands that faith is not a small side issue — it may be central to how you make sense of suffering, healing, identity and hope.

Hull’s own public health data shows that mental health need is significant locally, with a higher proportion of people reporting long-term mental health problems than the England average in the 2024 GP Patient Survey. This means you are not alone if you are finding life difficult, emotionally heavy or hard to manage.
